NadiaOS

Deploy Nadia as a ready-made virtual machine on VMware, Proxmox or Hyper-V, open her screen from a browser, and update her.

NadiaOS is a ready-made virtual machine with Nadia installed. Nadia is where your company's Agents work, answering clients and running scheduled jobs. Instead of installing her on a computer that stays at the company, the person who runs the company's machines deploys NadiaOS on its VMware, Proxmox or Hyper-V, and Nadia starts on it by herself. That machine is then the company's Installation, where Nadia and her Agents work.

What NadiaOS is

  • One file, the same for every company: Debian 13 with Nadia installed, with nothing to install after it starts.
  • The same machine in three formats: .ova for VMware ESXi and vSphere, .qcow2 for Proxmox and KVM, .vhdx for Hyper-V.
  • Its settings, given once when you deploy it: the machine's name, its network, the administrator's SSH key or password, and the screen password.
  • Nadia's screen: the machine shows Nadia's window on its own console. When you give a screen password, anyone who has it sees and uses that same screen from a browser.

Choose NadiaOS

Choose NadiaOS to run Nadia on a virtual machine in your company's own infrastructure. The images run on:

  • VMware ESXi 6.5 or later, as a machine with 4 vCPU and 6 GB of memory.
  • Proxmox VE or KVM.
  • Hyper-V, as a generation 1 machine.

At its first boot the machine makes its own SSH host keys and certificate, and Nadia's first start makes her own Installation. From the network the machine accepts only SSH and HTTPS.

Download NadiaOS

  1. In the Portal, open Get the apps.
  2. In Nadia's section, under NadiaOS, choose VMware for the .ova file, Proxmox for the .qcow2 file, which KVM takes too, or Hyper-V for the .vhdx file.

Deploy on VMware

On ESXi and vSphere, the deploy wizard asks for the machine's settings.

  1. Choose Deploy OVF Template, then the .ova file.
  2. Fill in the settings:
    • Machine name: the machine's name on the network, nadia unless you change it.
    • IP address: a fixed address with its prefix, such as 192.168.1.20/24. Leave it empty to take an address by DHCP.
    • Gateway and DNS servers: for a fixed address. Leave them empty with DHCP.
    • Administrator SSH key: an OpenSSH public key for the administrator, nadiaos. With a key, SSH takes the key only.
    • Administrator password: the password of nadiaos for SSH when you give no SSH key. Leave it empty when you give a key.
    • Screen password: the password that opens Nadia's screen in a browser.
  3. Finish the wizard and start the machine.

Give the administrator an SSH key or a password. A password needs at least 8 characters. vSphere keeps these answers in the machine's settings, where its administrators can read them.

Deploy on Proxmox or Hyper-V

On Proxmox, KVM and Hyper-V, the machine takes its settings from a CD at its first boot.

  1. Make an ISO image whose root holds ovf-env.xml: an OVF environment with each setting under its key, the same settings the VMware wizard asks for:
    • Machine name: nadiaos.hostname
    • IP address, Gateway and DNS servers: nadiaos.address, nadiaos.gateway and nadiaos.dns
    • Administrator password: nadiaos.admin_password
    • Administrator SSH key: nadiaos.admin_ssh_key
    • Screen password: nadiaos.screen_password
  2. Make the machine:
    • On Proxmox or KVM, import the .qcow2 file as the disk of a machine with SeaBIOS, a virtio-scsi controller and a virtio network card.
    • On Hyper-V, make a generation 1 machine with the .vhdx file as its disk.
  3. Attach the ISO image as the machine's CD, then start the machine.

Without a screen password, Nadia's screen does not open in a browser. A machine started with no settings takes an address by DHCP, keeps the name nadia and offers no remote access: its own console shows Nadia, and it looks for its settings again at its next start.

Open Nadia's screen

  1. In a browser, open https:// followed by the machine's address.
  2. The browser warns about the certificate, because the machine made its own. Continue to the page.
  3. Type the screen password. The browser asks for a user name too; it is not checked.
  4. Nadia's window appears. At her first start, click Sign in: the Portal opens on the same screen. Sign in there as Start and sign in says.

Update Nadia

Debian's security updates install themselves. Nadia's new versions arrive with the machine's system updates, which the administrator installs.

  1. Sign in to the machine by SSH as nadiaos.
  2. Run sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade.
  3. Quit Nadia from her window. She starts again on the new version a few seconds later.
